Meta Tags - Meta, meaning "hidden", concealed or out of sight.

Tag is just something to call something, a name or "label", if you will.

Used in the creation of html documents, and attributes within them.

Description
Keywords
There are others, but for basic purposes of Search Engine Optimisation, we focus on the three above.
Called Meta Tags, because all are only visible, within the source Code ( View > Page Source ). A Content Management System, may add others, depending on how it is configured. It will still show in the source.
These must be placed in the "Head" section, and vary a little depending on the declared Document type - closed, or not.
